“Nothing is as expensive as a start,” wrote Friedrich Nietzsche. Actually sitting down and beginning is one of the hardest parts of the writing process – and the beginning of your novel is one of the most important parts of the book. In this workshop, we’ll be talking about how to start: how much you need to know (or not know) beforehand, how to create a memorable opening paragraph, and how a strong beginning will give you a foundation on which to build the rest of the novel.

We’ll be doing some writing exercises; also, please bring along some favourite first pages to read aloud, and the beginning of something you are working on yourself.
