Fiction: Some Characters are looking for an Author
What makes for strong characters in fiction? Is it a character’s back-story, voice, language, actions, quirks, mysteries? Is it the degree to which a character changes? Is it other characters?
The workshop will explore the possibilities of character creation. What sort of character might emerge if most conventional aspects or attributes were omitted? What implications might this have for plot, form and narrative? We will study different ways of depicting character, and do a couple of writing exercises.
Please bring along examples of approaches to character you find interesting. Please bring a short sample (not more than one page) of your own writing that feels relevant.
