Narrative non-fiction: Politics and Poetics
The hardest thing to write about is now because this moment is perpetually in motion, becoming something else. This flux is especially charged in politically uncertain times, and perhaps, for this very reason, there comes a desire, even an imperative, to write from here and now. How can you write poetically about politics? How might different choices of language and form affect the personal attempt to make sense of social issues? The workshop will explore the scope for experimentation in essays. Examples of different approaches will be shared, and a couple of short writing exercises set.
Please think about one current event or issue you’d like to grapple with through writing. Please bring along one or two examples of essay writing you admire.
