Nostalgia

In this workshop we will try to unleash the creative energy of yearning for home. Graham Greene said that ‘a writer’s childhood is the bank at which, later in life, he will cash his creative cheques’, and yearning for a lost time or place has produced many great works of literature. We will look at exile, displacement and ‘places of the heart’, and ponder the question of what the word ‘home’ means in our scattered, globalised society. Our writing exercises could go either way: on one hand they might express how painfully we yearn for a lost time or place; on the other they might reveal how necessary it was to leave home, and how relieved we are to have done so…
