How to Write a Book Review
What makes for a good book review? And what distinguishes a literary critic fro the many bloggers, reporters, tweeters and fans writing about books on the Internet? Has criticism changed in the digital era? And how do you write an intelligent, informative, enlightening and entertaining review? I’ll talk about my experience assigning and editing reviews as the editor of the Book Review since 2013. What’s the difference between a good review and a bad one? What must every review include? What’s fair game in a book review? And other basic questions like: How does a literary essay differ from a review from an op-ed from a book feature? Knowing the elements of a well-done review will not only help you write them yourself, it will help you read them intelligently and ignore them when necessary.
Both of my workshops will be seminar style, with group discussion and an exercise or two. They are aimed at a general level and require no advance reading.
