Writing rubbish 1: How to delete your work
I observed once at a literary festival that I often delete complete early drafts of my novels to begin again with a new document. I was surprised by the audience’s shock; my writing process is messy and inefficient. I value play and experiment, which means that inevitably I type a lot of words I wouldn’t want to publish. I wouldn’t encourage anyone else to annihilate complete drafts (though if you feel like it…), but in this workshop I will ask you to befriend the delete key, to attempt daft ideas and impossibilities safe in the knowledge that you can make it all vanish at the press of a button.
Please bring a device with a delete function and a few pages of work in progress. (This is what backups are for. But not too many.)
