What are the connections between research and creative writing? How might ‘creative research’ be performed; when in the writing process ought it happen; and what processes count as ‘research’ in the first place? In this seminar, we will discuss these and other related questions as practicing writers. We will look at how others have drawn material from archives, news and information media, geographical settings, social contexts, and, of course, literature and art more broadly. We will consider the ethics of research, and also the different assumptions and expectations regarding the line between ‘factuality’ and ‘poetic licence’ in both fiction and non-fiction. Please come to this seminar with a ‘raw’ source of research in hand (or in your head), and a willingness to begin exploring, in a supportive environment, how to activate this as a writing project.
