Finding the star of your story

How do you go from one genre to another? I first clawed my way out of the literary slush pile twenty years ago, and though the technology of submissions has changed, the principles are the same. How do you convince a publisher to pay you for your words? What is it about your work that makes it unique so that it will stand out from the others? How do you identify and highlight the best theme and overarching messages in your piece and also make it sound like something the world will want to read? I will talk about my own strange path from failed newspaper columnist to travel to literary fiction, and the building blocks of a good book proposal. Of course too we’ll talk the importance of honing your amazing ideas and then having solid writing to back it up. If you have specific questions about a proposal you are putting together, I will try to answer these as best I can, though I won’t be able to review or critique individual proposals in detail. I will also be touching on the use of travel writing and personal nonfiction as a way to open doors. Aimed at new authors.
