Finding the Story
What makes a travel book work? I want to use this session to explore the basic premise of any travel narrative book – it must be about something. It must have a pattern in its carpet. A linear description of a journey is not enough. We will talk about some travel classics with this in mind, and students will have a chance to put forward their own story ideas for discussion. We’ll also look at the regular formats used in travel narratives: the quest, in the footsteps of, the link to the redemptive inner journey, etc.
