A Retreat from Silence: Writing Fiction from the Void
I recently wrote that “fiction, in its untrammelled position, speaks to no one and yet speaks to all.” It is the canvas by which, for many thousands of years, writers have attempted to design and document what it is to be human. In order to help us better understand how fiction works, we will examine the works of practitioners in their process of creating fiction.
You will also be required to bring two excerpts (one or two paragraphs each) of work you consider excellent and one you consider execrable. Workshop attendants will have read two short pieces of fiction from which I will base various discussions on aspects of craft and technique, as well as of the mechanics of fiction. You should also be prepared to do some writing exercises and practice.
