For many writers, writing sex scenes is a nightmare – something they feel is expected of them, but which they would much rather not do. Sex scenes are notoriously difficult. Will readers laugh inappropriately? Will they be disgusted? Or simply confused? And yet the writing of sex scenes is a rich topic for discussion as it draws together all the things that are most difficult about writing fiction. Of course there can be no hard and fast rules in so subjective an area, but this lighthearted workshop will lead you gently by the hand and point out the tiger traps along the way.
Advance work: For the sex scene workshop I’d like everyone to note down a book or story whose depiction of sex they think especially good and one they think especially bad, and to makes some notes as to why.
