Turning family narratives into fiction
“This was the trouble with families. Like invidious doctors, they knew just where it hurt.” The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy.
All families have their secrets and all families have their stories, using fiction to navigate both secrets and stories will be the basis of this workshop. We will discuss the line between fiction and non-fiction, the challenges of turning family members into literary characters, how to steer disordered real life stories into a plot and structure, and the ethical questions of what to include and what to exclude.
Please bring a short (one paragraph) family narrative that you believe has the potential to form the basis of a short story.
