Understanding Point-of-View and Perspective in Fiction

After the story itself there’s no more important decision a writer makes than who tells it. Thus, with each writing project a writer must choose a point of view and a perspective or perhaps several. With some stories these choices seem to fall naturally into place, but with others the decision seems more fluid and the options varied. But what are the elements of choice that go into the final decision and how do they affect your story? Each choice brings its own advantages and limitations. In this practical workshop we’ll talk about perspective and point of view and try we’ll also try exercises. You’ll learn how to better control and employ point-of-view and perspective and strengthen and nuance your knowledge of this fundamental part of storytelling.

This is a mixed level workshop open to writers of short stories and novels.
